Conference Room
2005
This project was created in response to an invitation to participate in a collaborative exhibition at Art & Idea in Mexico City. At a certain point, the collaborative process of the exhibition failed, and artists ended up generating their own unique projects.
This project turned the gallery foyer into a simulated conference room, providing each artist with a seat, nameplate, glass of water and notepad. The logo on the podium was an adaptation of another artist’s project in the exhibition which used a map Mexico City on a free poster.
The installation used the generic signifiers of group discussion and decision-making to draw parallels to collaborative processes. However, as the true collaborative process was never realized, the objects here stand in as representations for this process while simultaneously alluding to models of exclusion and hierarchies in so-called democratic processes.
