Operation Podium
2010

This sculpture consisted of 24 cases of pepsi in the configuration of the 1968 summer Olympics podium, upon which 2 black Olympic athletes raised their fists in the Black Power salute. These cases were open, and the cans of pop free to gallery visitors. The cases were replaced as needed.

This work was created in response to an invitation to exhibit during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics in a VANOC-sponsored exhibition. The title is taken from the 6 billion dollar Olympic security operation and served to challenge the strict regulations around corporate sponsorship and artistic freedom.
