Safe Assembly Area
2010

This work was created in response to an invitation to exhibit during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics in a VANOC-sponsored exhibition. The title is taken from the name given to designated protest areas created by VANOC, essentially large cages on the outskirts of Vancouver in which citizens were allowed to protest the Olympics. The original name for these areas was Free Speech Zones, but after significant local outcry, the name was softened to Safe Assembly Areas. This project dissected the gallery, and restricted free access from one side of the gallery to the other, and created a visual reference to the increased pressure on civic space in Vancouver in the run-up to the 2010 Olympics.
